That’s what data from phys.org indicates. But that’s not the end of it. A study by Digital International World reveals that 78% of such users tend to lose or forget the passwords to their accounts.
Now, this trend is worrying, to say the least.
There’s no significant risk in people forgetting their passwords and resetting them. What they do next, is what poses the real danger.
To avoid forgetting passwords, most people resort to using the same passwords for different accounts. The alternative is usually changing a few characters in the password.
If you’re familiar with brute-forcing passwords, then you’re well aware of the serious vulnerabilities caused by this trend. Essentially none of the accounts with the same or almost similar passwords are safe.
Knowing how does password manager work, is not the scope of this article. We’ll be talking about chrome password manager. With this utility, you can store your different passwords for different accounts securely, without the need to remember the passwords. Chrome’s password manager does that for you. This is where passwords are stored in Chrome. Once you have all your passwords located it is always a good idea to export it on to an External hard drive for extra protection.

How and where can you find your passwords in chrome
To find where your passwords are stored in chrome, you’ll need to run the chrome application on your smartphone device, or the chrome browser on your personal computer.
Using android
- Tap on the chrome application icon on your android device to run it.
- On the user interface, look out for three dots. They’re mostly on the bottom right corner, or for some devices on the top right corner.
- Tap on these three dots. That’ll bring you to another drop-down menu.
- Tap on “settings” in this drop-down menu.
- Select “passwords” or for some devices “save passwords” in the next drop-down menu that comes up.
- You’ll get another drop-down menu. Select the “view and manage saved passwords” option.
- To view your saved passwords, click on the website that has the account whose password you want to view.
- You’ll then be prompted to confirm your identity by some form of authentication. To do this, you’ll have to sign in to your google account or confirm your identity using a fingerprint scan.
Using IOS (iPhone & IPad)
- Quite similar to android, you’ll first have to the chrome application on your device.
- Once the application is running, click on the three dots at the bottom right of your screen.
- This will bring you a drop-down menu. Click on “settings” in this prompt.
- Next, select the “passwords” option
- This should bring you to your saved passwords. However, to view or edit your saved passwords, you’ll have to sign in to your google account to confirm your identity.
- If you’re not using Chrome to save your passwords, you may want to know where passwords are stored in a Mac.
Using Windows PC
- Start by first running the chrome browser. Click on the chrome browser icon to do this.
- With the chrome browser running, click on the profile icon. This will bring you a drop-down menu.
- Click on the key icon in this drop-down menu.
- This will open a tab with your saved passwords.
Alternatively;
- You can key in this on your chrome browser search panel: chrome://settings/passwords
- Press enter, and it should open a new tab with your saved passwords.
How to change your passwords in chrome
Using Android
- Run chrome on your device.
- Click on the three dots on the top right or bottom right of your screen.
- Tap on “settings” then the “save passwords” option.
- Select the “view and manage saved passwords” option.
- You’ll then have to sign in to your google account to verify your identity.
- After you’ve verified your identity, you’ll be directed to another page with a list of your saved passwords.
- Select the site with the password you want to change, then tap on the “edit” option to change the password.
Using IOS (iPhone & IPad)
- Run chrome on your device.
- Tap on the three dots at the top right corner, then on “settings”.
- Select the “Account” option, then “passwords”. Select the option to edit.
Using Windows PC
- Start by launching chrome browser on your computer
- Click on the three dots at the top right corner on your screen then click on “settings”.
- In the next menu, click on the “passwords” option under Auto-fill.
- To change your remembered passwords, click on the “view and manage your saved passwords” option with the google account link.
- You’ll have to confirm your identity by signing in to your google account.
- Click on the site with the password you want to change.
- Click on the edit option to change your remembered passwords.
Exporting your remembered passwords in google chrome
Using android
- Run chrome on your device.
- Tap on the three dots at the top right corner, then on the “settings” option.
- Tap on the option to “save passwords”, then tap on the option to “view and manage saved passwords”.
- In the next menu, tap on the settings icon just below the three dots at the top right corner, then select the “Export passwords” option.
Using IOS (iPhone & IPad)
- Run chrome on your device.
- Tap on “more …” at the bottom right of your screen then tap on “settings”.
- In the next prompt tap on “passwords” then select the “export passwords” option at the bottom of the menu that comes up.
Using Windows PC
- Launch Chrome on your computer.
- Click on the profile icon, then on the “key” icon.
- Scroll down the page that comes up to where there’s the “saved passwords” option.
- Click on the three dots attached to the “saved passwords” at the end.
- Select the “Export passwords” option.
How to delete your saved passwords in chrome
Using android
- Run chrome on your device
- Tap on the 3 dots at the top right corner, then on “settings”.
- Tap on the “save passwords” option.
- Select the site with the password you want to delete then tap on it.
- Tap on “delete” to remove the saved password.
Using IOS (iPhone & IPad)
- Run chrome on your device.
- Tap on “More …” at the bottom right of your screen, then on “settings”.
- Tap on “passwords”, then on the next menu select the “Edit” option.
- On the list of your saved passwords select the site with the password you want to delete, then tap on it.
- Select the “delete” option to delete the remembered passwords.
Using Windows PC
- Launch the Chrome browser on your computer.
- Click on the profile icon at the top right corner, then on the “key” icon.
- Scroll down to the list of your saved passwords.
- Select the site with the password that you want to delete.
- Click on the 3 dots at the end of the site with the password you want to delete, then select the “remove” option.
